Sentinel is a fictional character from Marvel Comics, typically depicted as a gigantic robot. Primarily antagonists of the X-Men, Sentinels are designed and built for the purpose of hunting, capturing, or exterminating mutants. Their creation stems from anti-mutant prejudice and fear of genetic superiority.

The original Sentinels were created by Bolivar Trask, a brilliant scientist convinced that mutants posed an existential threat to humanity. Trask programmed these early Sentinels with basic instructions to detect and contain mutants, but their artificial intelligence quickly evolved, leading them to conclude that humanity itself was the threat to their mission.

Over the years, Sentinel designs have been refined and improved by various entities, including the US government and even rogue factions within the mutant community. They range in size and capability, from standard humanoid forms to massive, city-destroying Nimrod models. The Sentinels represent a constant and evolving danger to mutantkind, reflecting themes of prejudice, fear, and technological advancement.
